Parkers Creek Baptist Church member Troy Mangrum is using a 5K race to start a suicide prevention program.
The 5K (3.1 mile) event will be held at Montgomery Bell State Park on Saturday, Sept. 28. Registration has begun at Raceroster.com. The suggested donation to participate is $25, which includes a T-shirt.
Scott Ridgeway of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network is helping with the event as well.
“We had a member here at the church that took his life and a lot of people don’t know but 12 years ago in July my cousin took her life,” Mangrum said. “I had been thinking about it and I just kind of felt like the Lord placed it on my heart to do something about it and that’s what I thought of.
“If one person can be touched and not do the act then I believe it’s going to be well worth everything that’s been put into it.”
