Parkers Creek Baptist Church member Troy Mangrum is using a 5K race to start a suicide prevention program.

The 5K (3.1 mile) event will be held at Montgomery Bell State Park on Saturday, Sept. 28. Registration has begun at The suggested donation to participate is $25, which includes a T-shirt.

Scott Ridgeway of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network is helping with the event as well.

“We had a member here at the church that took his life and a lot of people don’t know but 12 years ago in July my cousin took her life,” Mangrum said. “I had been thinking about it and I just kind of felt like the Lord placed it on my heart to do something about it and that’s what I thought of.

“If one person can be touched and not do the act then I believe it’s going to be well worth everything that’s been put into it.”
