CHARLOTTE – Friday Night Rivals has been putting on a show for the last 12 seasons, showcasing the area’s top high school football games.

And now it is Dickson County’s turn.

WUXP MyTV30 will begin its 2019 series by broadcasting the Creek Wood-Dickson County game in Charlotte on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“We’re excited to have this game because of history between the two schools,” Sinclair Broadcasting Executive Director Steve Mann said. “This is our 12th season and (this is) exactly the type of game we like to have.”

Mann said that he received a letter from Creek Wood football coach Houston Thiel explaining that the two schools would be great candidates for the Friday Night Rivals series.

Sinclair Executive Producer Lee Scott gave some details about the gameday prep and what goes in to producing the broadcast.

“It’s going to be a full production with five cameras,” he said. “We will have a high end zone camera, a low end zone camera, two (cameras) in the stands and a sideline camera, but we try our hardest to make it seem like we’re not even there.”

Scott said the main challenge is making sure the broadcast crew has enough space to operate. That means the host school must clear extra space in its press box.

“We’ve had some games where we didn’t have enough room, and we had to have the announcers on top of the press box or even (on) a scissor lift, which was a wild sight,” he said.

With the game being on TV, there will be some commercial breaks. There will be two, 60-second breaks each quarter. If there is a score, turnover or a team calls a timeout, that is when the commercial breaks will be taken.

Jonathan Hutton, a host on 104.5 The Zone’s Midday 180, will be the play-by-play announcer, and Josh Cory, who has worked with the Tennessee Titans broadcasting crew, will be the color commentator. Max Herz and Terra Reeves will serve as sideline reporters.
