CHARLOTTE— The Creek Wood Lady Red Hawks defeated East Hickman 47-36, while the Red Hawks defeated East Hickman 72-62.

The Lady Red Hawks put themselves in a bind when they allowed East Hickman to take a 13-4 lead at the end of the first period. But Creek Wood outscored East Hickman 17-10 in the second and allowed Creek Wood to make its way back into the game.

The first was chalked full of missed layups, so the Lady Red Hawks put together a new strategy that involved shooting, and shooting from deep, and they made those shots to narrow the deficit to 23-21 in favor of Hickman County at the half.

The Lady Red Hawks took a 37-29 lead in the third going into the fourth and then held off East Hickman to get the win.

“I told them after the game that it doesn’t always have to be pretty; just find a way,” said Creek Wood coach Russell Wilson. “Eventually our shots started falling, and we got the win.

“Our defense all year long hasn’t been too bad. East Hickman runs good stuff, but our defense and offense obviously work off of each other and get that energy. Our defense will step up get a stop or a turnover and get the ball in transition and that gives us momentum.”

The Red Hawks also got off to a sluggish start and allowed East Hickman to take a 19-14 lead by the end of the first and held off Creek Wood to keep the lead at 40-33 at the half. But the third brought a big run that allowed the Red Hawks to build a lead.

Creek Wood tied the game at 44-44, but the Red Hawks’ offense and defense both stepped up and allowed them to go on an 11-0 run that gave them a 55-44 lead. By the end of that third, the Red Hawks led 57-49 and held on for a strong fourth to win.

The Creek Wood boys moved to 12-3, while the girls improved to 15-3.
